#29 “Friendship is one of the sweetest joys of life like Ben and Jerry's!"
Friendship is one of the sweetest joys of life. There is something so spectacular about a true companion. We all know many famous duos: Spongebob and Patrick, Chip and Dale, Harry and Ron, Woody and Buzz etc. Friendship may be one of the sweetest joys of life...but what if we add ice cream to that friendship. Keep reading to find out about one of the coolest pairs there is - Ben and Jerry - and discover how they are making this world a better place one delightful treat at a time!
My most recent interview was with one-half of the ice cream duo - Jerry. I ask every person I speak with to describe who they were in high school. Jerry described himself as a nerdy kid who studied a lot and who wasn’t very sure of who he was. It was not surprising that Jerry was the first person (out of the twenty-eight so far) to bring up an important friendship he had as a teenager – he had a close friend named Ben.
Fast forward a few years, and Ben and Jerry found themselves ready to figure out life after school. They decided to join each other for the next chapter in their future. They both loved eating, so they went to a homemade ice cream class, and well, the rest is history!
In 1978, Ben and Jerry opened up their first ice cream scoop shop in a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont. From brownie batter core to chunky monkey to triple caramel chunk, their flavors have rocked our taste buds. They have also rocked this world. Their company strives to support progress in many issues they care about like fair trade, climate justice, LGBT equality, rBGH, peace building, getting the dough out of politics, refugees, racial justice, democracy, and GMO labeling. For example, the criminal and racial justice new flavor, Justice Re’mixed, was made in Partnership with the Advancement National Office - a multi-racial civil rights organization that works with local grassroots organizations on racial justice issues.
So, what can we learn from Jerry? First, friendship is so powerful. Be a friend and value every single person you meet. You never know what will happen. You might meet someone who enjoys ice cream as much as you. We can also learn that the first step to making the world a better place might be a very small step - like taking a homemade ice cream class. Maybe you and your friend’s first step will be to go to a movie together, volunteer together, or shovel snow together.
Make your life more flavorful, grab a friend, and go change the world today!
