#24 "I accidentally raised $50,000"

It is definitely running through your mind after reading the title of this blog that there is no way someone accidentally raised $50,000! Well, someone did. His name is Colton Underwood, and he is the founder of the Legacy Foundation ( Check out his story!

In high school, Colton loved football and dreamed of NFL glory days. He loved the Friday night lights and having his team by his side. Football was where he really shined, however you might be surprised to hear that Colton was not very confident. He struggled defining who he was and never really expressed himself. He kept his focus on sports which helped guide his future. Colton got a scholarship to play football at Illinois State University. He played for four years and then found himself playing in the NFL.

Soon after his NFL career began, his life changed. His cousin Harper was born with Cystic Fibrosis. Here is a video explaining it- ( Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States.

Colton talks about how in the NFL he had to follow a strict diet, take supplements and work through grueling workouts. But his cousin Harper has to work even harder - not for the glory on the field, but just to stay healthy.

Colton had a simple plan - he wanted to host a free football camp for his hometown. The word spread and before he knew it, people wanted logos on the back of t-shirts, and they were asking how they could be involved, so he tweaked his plan. He thought about his little cousin Harper and the 30,000 other CF warriors across America. All of the money made would help sponsor their fight against Cystic Fibrosis. Colton ended up raising $50,000, and he thought to himself, “I might be onto something,”.

That first $50,000 started Colton’s Legacy Foundation ( The Foundation raises funds to provide equipment and resources for people of all ages living with Cystic Fibrosis. They have partnered with International Biophysics, the makers of AffloVest, to provide 50 AffloVests to CF patients across the United States. These vests provide airway clearance treatment which is crucial for children and adults with CF. Colton’s foundation has visited children’s hospitals with NFL players to brighten the day of patients. They have raised $10,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic to purchase aerodynamic bikes and medical equipment for patients. They welcome 400 children each year to the Legacy Football Camps which has raised $60,000 to support clinical studies and research. All of this information has been taken from their website, but it doesn’t begin to explain the impact they have had on people with CF.

So, what can we learn from Colton? Well, when thinking about changing the world, everyone has thought to themselves this question, “What impact would I make?” Sometimes the things we want to change in the world seem too big to impact. Cystic Fibrosis is one of those things, and Colton’s legacy is making an impact every day. If you set out to help the world, you will and maybe you’ll accidentally raise $50,000 while doing it.

Keep Colton’s story in mind today and do something to make a difference. You never know what you will accidentally do!
